HOUR People: Leadership Development
We turn participation into stewardship — and stewardship into leadership.
Why Stewardship Matters?
Campaigns are carried by people, not just plans. That’s why HOUR Cooperative centers Keepers — the living guides of cooperation. Keepers turn values into practice. They ensure time is not wasted, voices are not silenced, and power is not delayed.
The Four Keeper Roles
-
Care Keepers
Create space for emotional support, conflict resolution, facilitation, and mentoring.
-
Place Keepers
Expand and represent the base through outreach, cultural engagement, arts, budgeting, and policy influence.
-
Task Keepers
Keep the work moving with logistics, data, event planning, recruitment, creative skills, and campaign management.
-
Time Keepers
Hold the longer arc with translation, coalition building, fundraising, policy advocacy, and strategy alignment.
Learning Pathways: Go From None → Know → Do → Teach
-
NONE
Just starting out — no prior experience required.
-
KNOWING
Learning the basics through workshops, shadowing, or mentoring.
-
DOING
Taking on responsibilities in real campaigns, events, or committees.
-
TRAINING
Passing skills on by teaching, mentoring, or leading others.
Examples of Stewardship in Action
-
To guide the conversation, a member steps up to run a tenant association meeting. They welcome everyone, make sure each voice is heard, and guide the group toward clear decisions without letting one person dominate.
-
To reach the community, member sets up a table in a building lobby with flyers about upcoming events. They greet neighbors, collect contact info, and follow up with phone calls to invite them into the cooperative.
-
To keep the work moving, member designs a simple flyer for an upcoming workshop, updates the contact list in the database, and makes sure chairs and childcare are ready for the event.
-
To speak truth to power, a member drafts a short statement about unsafe housing conditions and presents it at a city council hearing. Another reviews the co-op’s budget to keep things transparent and fair.
-
To grow new members, a longtime member invites a new volunteer to shadow them at a campaign planning meeting, then shows them how to take notes, follow up, and prepare for facilitation next time.
Step Into Stewardship
Leadership in HOUR Cooperative is not about titles. It’s about shared responsibility. Whatever your skills, there’s a Keeper role for you — and a pathway to grow.
